Your Guide to Raw Human Hair Extensions

Being new to this world of human hair extensions can be daunting. It is easy to become overwhelmed with all the different types of human hair extensions on today’s market. It’s not only important to know what you’re investing in but to understand as well. We all want the best of the best but to know the best and understand the best are two completely different things.

In this post, I’ll dive into what Raw Human Hair extensions are and touch base on why it acts the way it does. In a separate post we will go over how to care for such hair.

Note: At POMP Extensions we only supply Raw, single-donor, double drawn hair.

What is Raw human hair extensions?

Now, there’s raw hair and then there’s virgin hair, these terms are likely to be used interchangeably but don’t get confused with the two. You may see “Raw Virgin hair” used loosely as well, so let me explain the subtle but major difference.

Virgin hair is defined as 100% human hair. The difference lies in the amount of donors, the level and type of processing and manipulation. Raw hair would be your gold standard in which it is typically derived from a single donor, little to no chemical processing and manipulation. Virgin hair would adhere to more processing and there is a chance they also have multiple donors.

On todays market, Raw Human Hair extensions would be the best type of virgin hair to invest in. The minimal processing increases it’s longevity and the single donor ensures that any coloring, curly or manipulation is uniformed throughout each weft.

Note: That’s why it’s also advised to purchase your required amount of bundles for a hairstyle at once. This will ensure that all your bundles are more or less from that single donor.

What is Single Drawn vs. Double Drawn

Drawn is basically how the hair is gathered before being added to the weft. Single drawn hair tend to have multiple length which results in a thickness at the base, tapered towards the middle and thin at the ends.

Double drawn hair contains hair that’s is all the same length, this results in a thicker bundle from the base to the ends.

For example, a 20 inch double drawn bundle will contain all strands that are 20 inches in length. Whereas a 20 inch single drawn bundle will have some strands, about 30%, that are actually 20 inches mixed in with shorter lengths.

Note: At POMP Extensions, all of our bundles are double drawn. All lengths and all textures.

Now, for the most important bit.

Raw hair texture is naturally derived. I repeat, Raw hair texture is naturally derived! This means that it will respond to external elements, manipulation and hair care just as if it were your own hair. Hence, why raw hair will require more maintenance than virgin hair.

This means, your hair would need moisture, high heat will damage it and cold temperature will dry it out. Seems like a lot BUT check the hypothetical scenarios below.

Person A spends $300 on virgin hair for one hair style, Person A styles their hair four times per year and purchases virgin hair each time. That's $1200 spent, not including tax or cost to style and install.
Person B spends $600 on RAW hair (or raw virgin hair), styles their hair four times per year as well however does not need to purchase more hair each time. With a little more maintenance, Person B only spent $600 per year, not including tax or cost to style and install.

Note: quality extensions should last you 2-3 years.

To conclude, I say this to say...Good Hair is an Investment!
